FL Studio is the #1 DAW for modern producers — and the good news is you can make a real beat in it on day one. This guide walks you through your first beat from empty project to finished loop: drums, 808s, melody, arrangement, and a quick mix. No theory degree required.
Before you start: you need sounds. Grab our free drum kit — hard 808s, snares, hats and one-shots, royalty-free — so you can follow along with pro sounds instead of FL’s stock samples.
Step 1 — Lay Down the Drums
Open the Channel Rack and load your kick, snare, and hi-hats. Start simple:
- Kick on beats 1 and 3
- Snare/clap on beats 2 and 4
- Hi-hats on every 1/8 or 1/16 note, then add a few rolls
This is the backbone of trap, drill, and R&B. Use punchy, pre-mixed drums and your beat is halfway done — our drum kits are deconstructed from chart-topping records so they sit right with almost no tweaking.
Step 2 — Add the 808
The 808 is the soul of a modern beat. Load an 808 from your kit, then use the Piano Roll to write a simple bassline that follows your kick. Tune the 808 to the key of your melody (more on that next) and add a little glide for that sliding trap sound. A clean, tuned 808 instantly makes a beat sound professional.
Step 3 — Write a Melody
Melody is where your beat gets its identity. Load a melodic instrument (or a melody loop), open the Piano Roll, and write 4–8 notes. Don’t overthink it — simple melodies hit hardest. Step 4 — Arrange the Beat
A loop isn’t a song. In the Playlist, build an arrangement: intro → verse → hook → verse → hook → outro. Strip elements out in the verses and bring them back for the hook so the energy moves. Keeping listeners to the end is 80% arrangement.
Step 5 — Quick Mix
You don’t need a mastering degree to make a beat sound clean:
- Balance levels so nothing buries the 808 or vocals
- High-pass everything except the kick and 808 to clear mud
- Add light compression on the master
